Canada sets 8 September start for tariffs on C$27.6 billion in U.S. goods

Canada is scheduled to apply new tariffs to C$27.6 billion worth of American imports on 8 September 2026, bringing an announced retaliation against U.S. trade measures to its implementation date.

The duties will be set at 15%, 25% or 50%, depending on the product. Canada's Department of Finance says the measures target sectors including steel, dairy, household appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The government's updated product list specifies a start time of 12:01 a.m. on 8 September 2026. In some sectors, including steel and aluminum, existing Canadian counter-tariffs will rise from 25% to 50%. Other duties already in place, including those on U.S. automobiles, will continue.
