Human Rights Watch urged the African Union on September 9, 2026 to step up talks with Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front to address disputes threatening the Pretoria peace agreement.
In a dispatch, the organisation’s Africa advocacy director, Allan Ngari, called for an assessment of whether the mediation arrangements need strengthening. He also sought public reports from the AU’s Monitoring, Verification and Compliance Mechanism on implementation of the agreement, including allegations of remobilisation and abuses against civilians. The November 2022 agreement remains central to efforts to sustain peace after the 2020–2022 conflict. HRW identified disputed territories, the return of displaced people and disarmament as unresolved issues.
The appeal asks the AU to turn its conflict-prevention commitments into diplomatic action. It is a recommendation from the rights organisation; the dispatch does not announce a new agreement between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF.
