Malaysia has invited Ethiopia to open an embassy in Kuala Lumpur following talks between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in New Delhi on September 12, 2026.
Fana Media Corporation reported the invitation, which was also reported by Malaysia’s Free Malaysia Today. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
Free Malaysia Today reported that the leaders agreed to hold their first bilateral consultation in Kuala Lumpur in 2027 to discuss relations and explore further cooperation. The embassy invitation is a diplomatic proposal; the reports do not announce an Ethiopian decision to open a mission or an opening date.
Ethiopian News Agency, citing Abiy’s account of the meeting, said the discussions covered investment, tourism, renewable energy and industrial development. The leaders also discussed Malaysia’s experience with industrial parks and manufacturing.
The talks follow renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries. Malaysia’s foreign ministry records that its embassy in Addis Ababa reopened on September 23, 2025, ahead of Anwar’s official visit to Ethiopia in November 2025.
